Kai Havertz got Bayer Leverkusen off to a dream start in the 6th minute of this much anticipated Bundesliga tie. The momentum got Leverkusen going as they bossed possession in the first half and Mönchengladbach found them too hot to handle.
Leverkusen had lot's of quality throughout the game. Moussa Diaby looks a real prospect - You wouldn't be silly for mistaking him for Sadio Mane.
It could've been two before the break when Kerem Demiraby missed an a golden opportunity which was blocked off the line.
Mönchengladbach responded quickly after the start of the second half Alassane Plea played a long ball over the heads of the Leverkusen defence, it bounced once and bang! Marcus Thuram hit it sweetly to knock some confidence back into Die Fohlen.
Havertz scored again for Leverkusen in the second half when he converted from the penalty spot after Karim Bellarabi was fouled in the penalty area. Despite pointing to the spot, the referee checked VAR but went with his initial decision. Yann Sommer the goalkeeper, made significant contact with the ball but Havertz's shot was too powerful to keep out. That makes it 12 goals in the season now for the young German superstar.
Sven Bender put the cherry on top of the cake to make it an appetising Leverkusen victory.
A Borussia Park With 'Fans'
Borussia Park has been a fortress this season. Only Dortmund and Leipzig had won at this stadium before today in Mönchengladbach's 13 home games this season.
However, season ticket holders at Borussia Park had cut out cardboard copies of themselves to place in their designated seats in the stadium.
I suppose the noise was the only thing lacking. "You only sing when you're winning!"
All Change Please!
The two sides move places in the table. Leverkusen move into 3rd - Just four points behind second place Borussia Dortmund.
Whilst Borussia Mönchengladbach drop down to 4th in the league. after starting the day in 3rd.
