It was October 2008. I was eight years old and the excitement was exactly like Christmas morning.
Why? Because I was off to Wembley for the first time in my life. I was off to the home of football to watch England play Kazakhstan in a World Cup Qualifying match.
My Dad had always taken me to watch Brighton & Hove Albion play at the old Withdean Stadium which was bloody tiny! That was my cities local football ground. An old, rusty athletics stadium. Today it would be a very big jump from a that small 8,850 capacity to a 90,000 seater. I was not used to big stadiums.
As a kid, I always used to love watching England on the telly and I dreamt of going to Wembley one day. On the 11th of October 2008, I finally had my moment.
I don't remember much from the match itself as I was only eight years old but there is one moment that still sticks with me to this day - that first look at the stadium from a busy Wembley Park Station. I was very small and I couldn't see anything with the crowd of bodies in front of me. But my Dad lifted me up on his shoulders and what I saw was absolutely jaw-dropping.
From Withdean to Wembley, it was right there in front of me. Exactly how I thought it was going to look. The iconic Wembley arch high in the sunny sky. "just how it looks on TV!" - I said. Wembley is massive! The flags of St George were everywhere I looked - It was like being at a World Cup game. Then I couldn't wait to see Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney, Beckham and the rest take the pitch.
I can remember us being very high up in the stadium and one of those iconic England World Cup songs was blasting through the stadium speakers. I was so excited for kick-off. The view inside Wembley was brilliant. Soak it all in, you'll be back at Withdean next week.
The players walked out onto the pitch and we watched England win 5-1 against Kazakhstan. Rio Ferdinand, Jermaine Defoe, a Wayne Rooney brace and a Kazakhstan own goal would cap off a brilliant day out.
Going to Wembley is great. You'll be heading to a Colosseum where some of the greatest games in world football have taken place. You're also likely to find jaw-dropping eight year old kids.
