Jadon Sancho has been named in Gareth Southgate's England squad for the next coming international break. Many English supporters may not have heard of the 18 year old and might be wondering who the young man is.
Sancho was born on the 25th March 2000 in London to parents from Trinidad & Tobago. At age 7, Sancho joined Watford's academy. at 14 years old in March 2015, the forward moved to Manchester City for an initial fee of 66,000 under the EPPP (Elite Player Performance Plan). Jadon impressed at Manchester City's academy, playing regularly. He was tipped by many to be the future player of the first team but would he catch the eyes of Pep Guardiola?
In the spring of 2017, Jadon Sancho was part of the England team who reached the final of the U17 UEFA European Championships. England drew 2-2 and lost 4-1 on penalties. Sancho was named player of the tournament and featured in the team of the tournament. In September 2017, he was named in England's U17 World Cup squad but the players then new club Borussia Dortmund (more on them later) resisted the call up. The two sides eventually came to an agreement where he would be involved in England's group matches but his football in the knockout rounds (if England where to get there) would not be guaranteed. He scored twice on England's first match against Chile, however on the eve of their game against Japan on October 18th, he was withdrawn from the squad by Borussia Dortmund. England however did go on to win the tournament.
Reversing back to August 2017, Sancho joined German side Borussia Dortmund at age 17. Sancho turned down a new contract at City in July 2017 to find first team football. As a result, he rejected Pep Guardiola's invite to feature in Manchester City's pre season tour that summer. The forward arrived in Dortmund for £8 million and was immediately included in the first team squad. He played his first match for Dortmund on October 21st 2017, coming on as a substitute against Eintracht Frankfurt to become the first ever Englishmen to play for the club. He scored his first goal against Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga in a 4-1 win. Sancho even assisted two other goals in that game.
Sancho continues to impress in a Dortmund shirt and plays plenty of first team football for the young exciting team in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. Now that he'll be playing first team football for his country, his reputation is only going to get bigger.
